An Inaugural Prayer

Great Mother God,

If you're paying attention, and if you are ever inclined to intervene in the affairs of the inhabitants of this little ball of rock we call Earth, this may be the time for it. We've gotten ourselves in just about the worst set of messes even you could imagine, and we may have waited too long to do anything about it. We are well on our way to polluting our planet to death, we've allowed religious bigots and ignorant bastards to take control of our governments, and it was not until two months ago that we finally took some steps to turn things around.

Just in case you missed it, on November 4, we elected this skinny mixed-race young man with enormous ears and even more enormous intelligence as President of these United States. He's a good man, with immense talents, but the tasks ahead of him seem overwhelming. He is taking charge of a nation that is truly sick, maybe terminally. We have allowed ourselves to be dragged into two pointless wars on the flimsiest of justifications. We have permitted our government to torture and abuse prisoners with no scrap of due process. We have stood by helplessly as our society becomes ever more tilted in favor of the very rich, and we have shrugged it off as "globalization", or "allowing the market to work". The United States of America has lost its soul, and the entire world is praying that our new President can somehow help us find it again. Because, you see, this world truly needs a healthy United States.

Our prayer is that you will keep him safe and healthy, and allow him an opportunity to lead us out of this morass. God, please bless your servant, Barack.

Amen, and Amen
